Markham promoter grappling with delays ahead of inaugural IndyCar race

The inaugural IndyCar Series street race on the streets of Markham in greater Toronto is facing significant delays with the completion of the circuit by Green Savoree Race Promotions.

Amid other construction delays with finishing bridges and fencing and timing and scoring cables, the traditional Thursday track walk was canceled and teams were given instructions by the series to avoid loading equipment onto pit lane until late in the afternoon.

RACER has confirmed with IndyCar that the track walk is set to take place Friday morning and, at present, no rescheduling of the first IndyCar practice session at 3:05pm ET has taken place. How the delays affect the junior open-wheel series from Andersen Promotions and local series set to run at the event, is unclear.

The shift from Toronto’s Exhibition Place – site of the race since the 1980s – to the 12-turn, 2.2-mile Markham venue was formally confirmed on September 3, 2025.

“Green Savoree Toronto is announcing today a multi-year agreement with the City of Markham to be the new home of this Ontario motorsports tradition. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with Mayor Frank Scarpitti, his team at the City of Markham and IndyCar,” GSRP event president Jeff Atkinson, said at the time.

“The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham will build on the legacy of this great Ontario event which started in 1986. We look forward to welcoming all our fans, the drivers and race teams out to this terrific new venue in Markham Centre next August.”
