Gibbs a winner again with Cup Series triumph at Iowa

Ty Gibbs drove a two-tire strategy call to win No. 2 in the NASCAR Cup Series at Iowa Speedway.

The call was made by Tyler Allen ahead of the final pit stop. It came under green with Gibbs following Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell down pit road with 60 laps to go. At the time, Bell was the race leader.

Gibbs jumped him with the call. When the field then cycled out, Gibbs had the track position to keep Bell at bay during the final stint. He cycled to the race lead with 21 laps to go.

“I just had to keep my head down, gel up, and stay with it,” Gibbs said. “I appreciate my team, [spotter] Tony Hirschman. All glory to Jesus Christ.”

Bell finished second for the seventh time this season. He remains winless.

The race leader going into the final pit cycle, Bell’s crew chief, Adam Stevens, went with four tires. The team had won the second stage and led 108 laps to that point.

Ryan Blaney finished third. Blaney started from the pole, won the first stage, and led the most laps (129).

Josh Berry finished fourth, and Denny Hamlin finished fifth. Hamlin had to nurse a car fighting brake issues all weekend.

Chase Briscoe finished sixth, Ross Chastain finished seventh, AJ Allmendinger finished eighth, and William Byron finished ninth. Austin Dillon completed the top 10 finishers.

With an 11th-place finish, Connor Zilisch tied his career-best on an oval. He qualified eighth and was much of the day inside the top 15.

Bubba Wallace finished 12th after a speeding penalty. Wallace was leading the race when it occurred.

Kyle Larson finished 33rd. Larson had contended inside the top five before an incident off Turn 4 in which he was on the outside of a four-wide situation that ended with contact.

Tyler Reddick failed to finish the race and was credited with a 36th-place finish. He fell to fourth in the championship standings.

Reddick was one of three drivers who did not finish the race. Erik Jones, whom he collected in his incident, finished 35th, and Alex Bowman finished 34th. Bowman's car was damaged in the Larson incident.

There were nine lead changes among six drivers in the Iowa Corn 350. There were seven caution flags.
