Malukas taken to hospital after Nashville practice crash

David Malukas has been taken to hospital for additional testing following his heavy crash during Saturday’s opening practice session for IndyCar’s Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway.

Malukas was on his fifth lap when he lost control of the No.12 Team Penske Chevrolet in Turn 2, spinning up the track and rear-first into the wall. In-car footage showed his knee appearing to hit the steering wheel so hard that it disengaged the safety release and disconnected the wheel from its column.

Malukas was taken to the infield care center, where he was reported to be “awake and in good spirits.” After the session, the series provided an additional update indicating that he had been transported to a local hospital by private vehicle for further testing.

Saturday morning’s practice session, in which Malukas finished third fastest despite his early exit, was the only track time available to the drivers before qualifying later this afternoon.

Malukas enters the weekend with a nine-place grid penalty for an unapproved engine change.
