Chevrolet's Indianapolis engine woes continue with Ferrucci failure

“We just blew up,” was the message Santino Ferrucci delivered to his crew as he slowed in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevy towards the end of practice on Friday.

The unfortunate event was the sixth of its kind since April 27 at the Indy Open Test and fourth since the start of Indianapolis 500 practice.

“Chevrolet is aware of some isolated engine issues experienced by a small number of Chevrolet-powered entries during Indianapolis 500 practice this week,” a Chevy spokesperson said. “We are working closely with our teams to review. Our focus is on understanding the facts as quickly as possible while continuing to provide our teams with the performance, reliability and support they need as preparations continue for qualifying and the Indianapolis 500.”

Chevy earned pole position for the last two Indy 500s and won the only oval race held so far this year as Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden captured the 200-mile Phoenix Raceway event. But the shift to Indianapolis has been an escalating point of concern for the Bowtie as Jack Harvey, Sting Ray Robb, Ed Carpenter, Scott McLaughlin, Alexander Rossi, and now Ferrucci have dealt with a myriad of problems that have required engine changes.

“Obviously, not ideal, but yeah, we’ll get it right for tomorrow and we’ll be fine,” Ferrucci added.
