Brabham sweeps Sonoma Trans Am doubleheader with another dominant showing
Matthew Brabham (No. 16 Gymweed Ford Mustang) and Chris Dyson Racing have successfully swept the weekend in the Trans Am Series by Pirelli at Sonoma Raceway, taking home a dominant victory in Sunday’s final leg of the TA class at the California road course.
The Boca Raton, Fla., native did exactly what he’s done all season long in the TA class; start from the pole, lead every lap, and win the race. It’s the 12th victory (in 20 starts) for Brabham in the TA class, which moves him equal with Paul Menard and Brian Simo.
Brabham executed a perfect 40-lap contest around the 2.52-mile road course on Sunday, maintaining a gap of more than a second on his closest challenger, Paul Menard, to hold himself in the lead of the race, and avoid the potential for any late-corner lunges. At the end of the race, the green-and-white Gymweed Ford Mustang held a lead of 4.176 seconds on the former NASCAR Cup Series driver.
“It was a tough one,” Brabham said. "Obviously, the guys [were] thrashing to get Rafa [Matos]’s car out there so it’s a shame to not have him on the grid, but they worked so hard, it was just such a tight thing there. So, I was kind of on my own while they’re all working on his car. The team did an excellent job, all the guys and girls and Chris Dyson Racing all weekend have been giving us such fast cars.”
Rafa Matos (No. 20 RACER / Gym Soda Ford Mustang) put up a challenge for Brabham on Saturday, until a mid-race mechanical issue, but didn’t even take the green flag on Sunday, after suffering an engine issue in the morning warmup.
“I’m living the dream, winning all these races,” Brabham continued. “It’s not always like this, so I’m really enjoying it, soaking it up as much as I can.”
With Sunday being the second 40-lapper of the weekend, mechanical wear-and-tear was a problem for several drivers, leaving only four TA class vehicles running without problems by the end of the contest.
Simon Gregg (No. 59 Trench Shoring Chevrolet Camaro) survived to the end of the event and earned the final step on the podium. David Pintaric finished fourth, after a pair of incidents throughout the event that involved Jim Guthrie, and Tomy Drissi finished fifth after having a mid-race mechanical issue.
Leaving Sonoma, the TA class is off until Memorial Day weekend in May at Lime Rock Park. Brabham currently holds a 23-point lead over Paul Menard. The two drivers have finished first and second in pretty much every session throughout the first four rounds of 2026.

TA Cup class
In just his third career starts in the Trans Am Series by Pirelli, Phil Fogg Jr. (No. 67 Chris Evans Race Cars Ford Mustang) is a winner in the TA Cup Class, after problems for the two main championship contenders in the division.
Those problems started from the first corner of the first lap, when David Pintaric (a driver in the TA class) got into the left-rear of Jim Guthrie (No. 62 Guthrie’s Garage Ford Mustang) and spun him around, drawing a full-course caution. The pair got together again later in the race in Turn 11.
After those early issues for Guthrie, Cole Moore (No. 27 JM Environmental / Moore Motorsports Ford Mustang) looked like he would easily be able to collect the class victory on Sunday, until the engine died on his machine, forcing him to park off the racetrack.
Fogg Jr. was the beneficiary of both incidents, inheriting the lead and going on a nice Sunday drive to secure his first-ever Trans Am victory – holding a gap of 57.592s at the conclusion of the 40-lap contest.

SGT class
The second leg of this weekend’s Sonoma Raceway doubleheader for the Trans Am Series by Pirelli saw the second round of a one-on-one fight between Chris Coffey and Patrick Utt for the victory in the SGT class.
Coffey (No. 97 Traffic Grafix / NAI Racing / GTE Eng Ferrari 458 Challenge) was the class of the field, once again, pulling out to an easy lead on Patrick Utt (No. 49 RaceQuip / Driven Racing Oil Chevrolet Camaro) and finishing the race two laps ahead.
Utt, in his post-race interview on the podium Saturday, admitted that his team didn’t have quite the speed as Coffey, but were going to continue working on it to get closer, and did, posting his best lap on the 29th lap of the 40-lap contest, inching closer to the No. 97.
It’s the 22nd career Trans Am victory for Chris Coffey, which ties him with Peter Gregg and Scott Pruett inside the top-10 all-time for Trans Am victories between all classes, all time.
