Rolex 24, Hour 7: Corvette wrestles back GTD Pro lead
The latest round of pit stops in the seventh hour of the race saw the No. 93 Acura emerge in the lead with Nick Yelloly strapped in. The No. 7 Penske Porsche was close behind, though, and like the previous hour, snatched the top spot back courtesy of a nice move from Felipe Nasr just before the hour came to an end.
The No. 6 sister Penske Porsche is firmly back in the running and has climbed to second, with Kevin Estre following in his teammate's footsteps. After the two quickfire changes, Yelloly started hour eight down in third, with the No. 24 BMW in fourth with the best of the Cadillacs - the No. 40 from Wayne Taylor Racing - fifth.
During the hour, both Connor Zilisch and Will Stevens from the Cadillac contingent stopped by the Media Center. Zilisch, driving for Action Express here, was his usual positive self following his first GTP race stint. He admitted that the Porsches look strong, but feels the Cadillacs shouldn’t be counted out just yet.
Stevens, meanwhile, revealed that the No. 10 Cadillac suffered from an issue with the air jack lance early in the race, which cost the team time for multiple stops as they worked on a fix. “We did well to stay on the lead lap and can push a bit more now that’s fixed," he said.
In LMP2, Crowdstrike by APR has taken the reins and is in the lead after AO Racing opted to put its Bronze driver, PJ Hyett, in the car as the haze began to set in. United Autosports’ No. 22, currently steered by Paul Di Resta, climbed to second, pushing AO to third.
GTD Pro is led by Corvette, which has wrestled the lead back, with the No. 3 Z06 GT3.R leading the No. 4. The No. 69 GetSpeed Mercedes is third, with the No. 1 Paul Miller BMW that led in the sixth hour down to fourth.
Heart of Racing holds a 9s advantage with its No. 27 Aston Martin over the Winward AMG in the GTD ranks. The highest placed Ferrari, the No. 21 from AF Corse, completes the top three.
