Power to make sportscar debut at Indianapolis 8 Hour

Will Power will make his sportscar racing debut at next weekend’s Indianapolis 8 Hour.

The two-time IndyCar champion and 2018 Indy 500 winner will suit up for 75 Express in the team’s No.75 Mercedes-AMG GT3, joining owner-driver Kenny Habul and Supercars star Chaz Mostert. Habul and Power are long-time friends, and one-time rivals from their years in the Australian Formula Ford Championship.

The deal marks a delayed start to Power’s GT career, which was originally slated to begin at the 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona. On that occasion he was entered as part of the line-up in Habul’s SunEnergy 1 Racing Team, but withdrew to focus on his wife Liz as she dealt with complications from a surgery.

As well as giving Power a chance to dip his toes into the waters of GT racing, next week’s race also gives him a way to occupy himself as he awaits his first opportunity to drive Andretti Global’s No.26 Honda IndyCar, which he will take over from Colton Herta after his 16-year relationship with Team Penske came to an end with this year’s IndyCar season’s finale at Nashville in August.

Power is a five-time winner on the IMS road course.
