Lundgaard tops second practice at Road America

Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard was the first driver to post a quick lap Saturday morning at Road America during practice for the XPEL Grand Prix and held the top spot after the 45-minute session was completed.

With temperatures climbing towards 90 degrees and a final resting spot in the low 90s expected for qualifying, getting a read on the car and a few chassis setup items before ambient conditions roasted everyone’s Firestone tires was a priority.

“We decided to go out on new tires in the beginning and the track was potentially better,” Lundgaard said. “The car was fast enough; it got hotter at the end of the session. I think we’re looking good for qualifying.”

The Dane’s No. 7 Chevy produced a 1m45.341s to lead Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou who turned a 1m45.591s in the No. 10 Honda, and behind them, Friday’s fastest driver Kyle Kirkwood was third in the No. 27 Andretti Global Honda with a 1m45.712s until the final lap, when Team Penske’s Will Power generated a 1m45.680s lap to displace Kirkwood to fourth.

Kirkwood’s Andretti teammate Colton Herta was fifth with a 1m45.716s in the No. 26 Honda and Ganassi’s Scott Dixon completed the top six with a 1m45.738s tour in the No. 9 Honda.

The session had its share of spins and excursions off the racing surface, but no major incidents were recorded.
