Schumacher makes Indy 500 visit amid Cadillac F1 consideration

Mick Schumacher made visits to two notable events in May following tentative talks with Cadillac about its future Formula 1 driver line-up.

RACER understands Cadillac has spoken with a wide range of drivers that have F1 experience in either a race or reserve capacity, including Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu, Felipe Drugovic and Fred Vesti. Another one of those is Schumacher, who last raced in F1 in 2022, at the end of his second season with Haas.

After two years as a reserve option for both Mercedes and McLaren, Schumacher has been racing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship this season, but he was present in Miami to attend the Cadillac F1 launch event that was held in Miami Beach at the start of this month.

Schumacher followed that with a trip to Indianapolis for the day ahead of the Indy 500, where he confirmed his sole focus at present is trying to return to F1 in a racing capacity. TWG Motorsports CEO Daniel Towriss was at both events, the latter through the company’s running of the Andretti Global effort in IndyCar.

So far, Cadillac’s discussions with drivers have been preliminary to understand the options available and gauge interest, but sources confirmed to RACER that those conversations are likely to become more serious in the coming weeks as Cadillac works to identify the ideal driver line-up for its debut F1 season.

The team has also been considering Colton Herta – should he earn an FIA Super License this year – and F2 championship contender Jak Crawford, who took his second victory of the season in the feature race in Monaco to move just 14 points off the championship lead.
