F1 rookie race pushed back to 2025
A proposed Formula 1 race for rookie drivers at the end of the season has been pushed back to 2025 due to timing constraints, the FIA has announced.
The idea to run a race for rookie drivers alongside the traditional young driver test in Abu Dhabi had received widespread support earlier this year, with F1 keen to try and make it a reality at the end of this season. However, following a meeting of the F1 Commission at the RB headquarters in Faenza, it was agreed to target 2025 instead.
The meeting -- featuring all of the teams and chaired by FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis and F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali -- saw the concept discussed relating to 2024, but the FIA announced that “while the concept received widespread support, it was determined that due to timing and organizational constraints, the event would not take place in 2024, and discussions will continue to formulate a potential concept and plan for 2025.”
Also discussed in the meeting were the 2026 regulations, with the technical regulations amended in areas of performance, aerodynamics and safety. The FIA stated that “these involve an increase of the expected aerodynamic performance of the cars following extensive collaboration between the teams and the FIA over the last few months,” as well as discussions during recent Technical Advisory Committee meetings.
The financial regulations will be an evolution of the current framework, while on the sporting regulations front there has been “a significant revamp, seeking to simplify their structure.”
One of the changes to the sporting regulations confirmed a trio of three-day tests for 2026, to meet the challenges presented by the new power unit regulations that will be introduced in just over a year’s time.
