Engine troubles halt Larson's first Indy 500 qualifying run
Kyle Larson’s first attempt to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 was going well for the first three laps, but some form of issue with the engine in his No. 6 Arrow McLaren/Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet caused the NASCAR Cup champion to abandon the run and pit to seek insights on what took place.
“There's some alarm that popped up on the engine cut a bunch of power,” Larson said. “I don’t know what happened. We didn’t make it off Turn 2.”
Hendrick's Brian Campe, who won the 2015 Indy 500 as race engineer for Juan Pablo Montoya and serves as Larson’s race strategist, hopes to get out for a run by mid-afternoon.
“We’re still investigating,” he said. “They guys are diagnosing it. We have good speed and sometimes these things happen.”
