Larson crew members penalized for Texas wheel infraction
NASCAR issued multiple suspensions for crew members on Tuesday after its tripleheader weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.
As expected, Calvin Teague (tire changer) and Brandon Johnson (jack) were suspended for the next two NASCAR Cup Series races for the right rear wheel that came off Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Larson was leading when the wheel came off under caution as Larson went into Turn 1 on lap 117.
The suspensions follow the two-lap penalty Larson served during the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400. He finished 21st.
NASCAR issued a one-race suspension to three other crew members for safety violations with protective clothing. Officials have been more stringent this season about enforcing rules relating to the clothing and equipment used on pit road.
Zachary Yager, Jacob Holmes, and Doug Warrick were suspended through Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway. Yager, RFK Racing’s No. 17 team, was penalized for a glove infraction. It was a helmet strap infraction for Holmes, who is a member of the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 team, and a helmet infraction for Warrick, who was pitting the No. 33 entry for Richard Childress Racing.
The same penalty was also issued to Brandon Harder of the JR Motorsports No. 9 Xfinity Series team with Brandon Jones. Harder is the fueler for the team and earned a protective apron infraction.
Two crew chiefs in the NASCAR Xfinity Series were penalized $5,000 for having one unsecured lug nut on their vehicles after the race. They were Philip Bell of the No. 9 team and Patrick Donahue of the No. 48 Big Machine Racing team for Parker Kligerman.
Chris Carrier of Henderson Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series was fined $5,000 for the loss of two lug nuts and suspended for the next race at Kansas. Henderson oversees the No. 75 truck, which was driven by Stefan Parsons.
Lastly, Nicholas Covey has been indefinitely suspended for violating the substance abuse policy. Covey was most recently listed at the jackman for the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing entry two weeks ago.
