Johan Schwartz won Saturday afternoon’s TC contest in dominating fashion on Sonoma Raceway’s 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. The No. 80 Rooster Hall Racing BMW M240iR Cup led flag to flag, Schwartz scoring his fourth TC America win of the 2019 season and padding his lead in the driver’s championship.
The 21-lap race was held under sunny skies in 91-degree heat. Schwartz led from pole into Turn 1, with teammate Steve Streimer (No. 81 Rooster Hall Racing BMW M240iR Cup) slotting into second. Shaun Webster (No. 31 Hard Motorsport BMW M235iR Cup) and Robert Nimkoff (No. 20 Auto Technic Racing BMW M240iR Cup) pursued in third and fourth, the top four holding their positions through lap 7 as Schwartz built a 1.5-second lead.
On lap 8, Tom Capizzi (No. 52 Auto Technic Racing’s BMW M240iR Cup) and 2016 TC champ Toby Grahovec (No. 26 Classic BMW M240iR Cup) both pushed past Nimkoff, demoting him to sixth.
In the latter stages of the race, with Schwartz continuing to build his gap on Streimer as the pair slowly pulled away from the pack, a heated back-and-forth battle emerged between Webster and Grahovec, who had moved into fourth. The battle came to a head on the white flag lap as the two competitors came together through turn 7. Webster spun, dropping to seventh, while Grahovec carried on in third.
At the checkered, Schwartz crossed the line 2.6 seconds ahead of Streimer, with Grahovec third, Nimkoff fourth and Capizzi completing the top 5.
Teams and drivers must now get set for Race 2, scheduled for a green-flag start Sunday at 9:35 a.m. PDT. All races will be streamed live on TCAmerica.us, with race highlights on CBS Sports Network.
