Project 1 suffers major fire at Sebring test

The FIA WEC GTE Am-leading Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR has suffered a major fire during a test at Sebring International Raceway ahead of next week's Sebring 1000 Miles.

Sources report that the fire broke out at the rear of the car during the second day of official testing prior to next weekend’s race, and that the car was destroyed in the ensuing blaze.

Jorg Bergmeister was at the wheel and thankfully was able to escape unhurt. However, first responders on scene were unable to prevent the fire from engulfing the whole car. A witness said that the Porsche had “basically burned to the ground!”

A further report confirmed that the damage is extensive, and the team is now working with Porsche to source a replacement chassis in time to compete next week.

Project 1 is expecting delivery of a second 911 RSR in time for its ELMS campaign, so that it can run a car apiece in the ELMS in 2019 and in FIA WEC during the 2019/20 season.

The test session was resumed after the wreckage was removed.
