CORE autosport honors Nissan GTP with 2019 DPi livery
Jon Bennett’s CORE autosport team is new to IMSA’s factory-based prototype category with the No. 54 Nissan Onroak DPi, but that hasn’t stopped the owner/driver from paying homage to the Japanese brand’s greatest days in North American sports car racing.
The team’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship entry for 2019 will bear a tribute livery that features a strong similarity to the Electramotive- and NPTI-entered IMSA GTP machines that won four consecutive titles from 1988-1991 as Bennett and his co-drivers attempt to earn the DPi championship.
“Knowing that 2019 was a celebration of IMSA’s 50th season we knew we wanted to do something special with our livery to recognize that milestone,” Bennett said. “Once we knew we’d be racing the Nissan this year, there wasn’t even a question about what throwback livery we’d use; it’d have to be the legendary red, white and blue of the GTP era. Seeing fans requesting that very concept on social media made it clear we’d made the right choice.”
CORE joins Acura Team Penske, Ford Chip Ganassi Racing, and Riley Motorsports among entrants who’ve chosen vintage liveries to honor IMSA on its half-century mark.
