Rosenqvist returns to Mahindra Formula E team for Saudi opener

Newly signed Chip Ganassi Racing IndyCar driver Felix Rosenqvist isn’t quite finished with his old gig in the ABB Formula E Championship just yet. The Swede, who raced for Mahindra Racing in the all-electric series this season, will return to the team for the 2018-19 season opener in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia next month. Rosenqvist will race alongside Jerome d’Ambrosio in place of the team’s new rookie driver, Pascal Wehrlein, for the December 15 event on the Ad Diriyah street circuit. The change was made because Wehrlein was unable to negotiate a release from his contractual obligations to Mercedes’ young driver program before the end of the calendar year.

After making his Formula E debut with the Indian team during its 2016-17 campaign, the 27-year-old Rosenqvist secured Mahindra’s first race victory at the 2017 Berlin E-Prix. He went on to score another two victories in his second season with the team.

“I’m happy to be back with the guys at Mahindra Racing again for Riyadh,” said Rosenqvist. “It will be a special occasion, marking the start of an exciting new era for Formula E with the commencement of Season 5.”

“While I didn’t attend the official pre-season test in Valencia, I did a lot of running in the new car during its development stages this summer, so I should be prepared. I’m looking forward to getting back to work with the team one more time and will do my best to help launch us into the new season with success.”

After this race, Rosenqvist will turn his focus back to his impending rookie IndyCar season with Ganassi. Wehrlein will take over Mahindra’s No. 94 car starting with the second round of the 2018-19 season in Marrakesh on January 12.
