Larson's team loses final appeal

The penalty issued to Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 42 team will stand after the team lost both its appeals on Friday.

National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer Bryan Moss heard the argument late Friday evening at Kansas Speedway. Kyle Larson’s team was penalized after last weekend’s Talladega Superspeedway race for using unapproved materials to fix his damaged racecar.

Crew chief Chad Johnston has been fined $25,000 and the team loses 10 driver points and 10 owner points. Car chief David Bryant has been suspended for one race, which will be served this weekend during the elimination race at Kansas.

With the penalty, Larson remains 11th on the playoff grid but is now 36 points below a transfer spot. After hitting the wall in practice on Friday and moving to a backup car for qualifying and the race, he will start Sunday afternoon’s race from the rear of the field.
