Juncos Racing’s newly crowned Pro Mazda Champion Rinus VeeKay will return to the team for the eighth Annual Chris Griffis Memorial Test for the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires sessions.
The 17-year-old VeeKay dominated the second half of the Pro Mazda season, winning five straight races and six consecutive poles to clinch the title, ending the season with seven wins, seven poles and 10 podium finishes.
“I’m happy to say that I will test Indy Lights at the Chris Griffis test with Juncos Racing,” VeeKay said. “I’ve experienced an amazing and very successful Pro Mazda season with them and I am looking forward to prepare myself for the next level in my Road To Indy!”
Added team owner Ricardo Juncos: “We are really excited to get Rinus in the Indy Lights car with us this weekend. He had an incredible Pro Mazda season. It was a battle for the championship all year long, but Rinus really started taking control with his five straight wins. He was extremely focused all year and it proved to pay off by winning the championship.
“I know he will be successful this weekend when he gets behind the wheel of the Indy Lights car.”
All three levels of the Mazda Road to Indy – the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires – will take part in the two-day test.
The team also announced that its Pro Mazda test participants will be Australian native Cameron Shields, who is making his Road to Indy debut, and Singapore native Danial Frost, who made his MRTI debut in USF2000 in 2018. Shields, 17, currently competes in three disciplines the Australian Formula 3, CAMS Payce Australian Formula 4 and Australian Formula Ford; Frost has nine wins over the past three seasons in various formula series.
The eighth annual Chris Griffis Memorial Open Test will take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course September 22-23. The test is named in honor of Chris Griffis, a longtime member of the motorsports community who led the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports w/ Curb-Agajanian Indy Lights organization before passing unexpectedly in September 2011.
