Daly's promising Xfinity debut ends early

Conor Daly is left to wonder what could have been in his NASCAR debut after a solid run ended with an early exit in Saturday afternoon’s Xfinity Series race at Road America.

Daly, the IndyCar veteran whose weekend was complicated by a late and controversial decision by sponsor Lilly Diabetes to withdraw sponsorship from his car, competed in a third entry for Roush Fenway Racing. And Daly had been running 11th with 10 laps left in the 45-lap race when he radioed a problem and headed for the garage, making an early exit from the Johnsonville 180. He was credited with 31st.

Daly qualified 15th and bounced up and down the leaderboard throughout his stint. Finishing 15th in stage one, Daly cracked the top 10 late in stage two before slipping to 11th at the green-and-white checkered flag.

Of the 35 laps Daly completed, his average running position was 18.07.
