Robinson Racing to field O’Connell father-son duo at Utah

The dream of sharing a car comes true for Canaan and Johnny O’Connell next weekend at Utah Motorsports Campus, where the duo will pilot the No.72 in GTS Sprint-X Pro-Am.

“I am excited to have Canaan and Johnny O’Connell joining Robinson Racing for The Grand Prix of Utah,” said Robinson Racing team owner George Robinson. “This will be the second time Johnny has joined Robinson Racing, with the first being a long time ago at Watkins Glen. We are looking forward to having the O’Connells drive for us in a Chevrolet / Pratt & Miller GT4.R Camaro.”

The GTS class is new for both O’Connells, but they are no stranger to Pirelli World Challenge. Johnny is a four-time PWC-GT champion with Cadillac, earning over 20 wins, and last year Canaan had five wins and eight poles in his TCB debut season.

“When Canaan was a boy, I recall watching Mario Andretti racing with his kids and thinking that has to be the coolest thing a father can experience,” said Johnny O’Connell.

“Getting the chance to do that at this stage of my career – with my son – is something I could not be more thankful for. A big thanks to George Robinson, Robinson Racing, and of course Cadillac for letting me take advantage of this opportunity. It’s been about nine months since I was last in a car, but I’m hopeful that the rust will fly off quickly and that we’ll be able to once again put in a strong performance for Chevrolet, this time in a Camaro. Hopefully we can build upon this foundation and find ourselves in a good position for 2019.”

Canaan shares the same excitement as his father.

“Needless to say, hearing about the opportunity to co-pilot a Chevy Camaro with my Dad and Robinson Racing was, by far, the most exciting news of my life,” he said. “Spending 2017 World Challenge race weekends together had already been a dream come true for me, but I never envisioned the possibility of actually sharing a car with my Dad. This is a special moment in my life.”
