Vesko Kozarov made it look easy Saturday at Portland International Raceway, driving his No. 3 Reardon Racing Nissan 370Z TC Spec racer to the Touring Car Round 7 sprint race win as part of the 58th annual Rose Cup Races featuring the Pirelli World Challenge.
In the 40-minute race, Kozarov jumped to the lead from his pole position and basically never looked back in winning the TC feature by 8.496 seconds over his teammate Paul Terry in the No. 33 Rearden Racing Nissan 370Z TC Spec in the 29-lap event.
“It is nice to be back on the top step of the podium here at Portland,” said Kozarov, a double winner at COTA earlier this year. “The Reardon team did a great job preparing the car. I had the nice part of steering it around the track today. Now, we’ll look to take another win on Sunday.”
“Vesko is a hell of a good shoe out there and I was happy to follow him across finish line in second today,” said Terry. “I drove the best race I could and got a little gap on Johan in third. This is the first time I have been to the Portland track and it is a fun little track. I like it. It has some fast stuff and it was good for our Nissan today. Ready for Sunday’s race now.”
Third went to 2018 VIR and Lime Rock Park race winner Johan Schwartz in the No. 80 Rooster Hall Racing/West Virginia University BMW M235iR.
“My car was phenomenal today after we had an issue in qualifying on Friday,” said Schwartz. “The BMW was very good on long runs today and that was what we wanted. We think we can improve the car for Sunday with a few little changes. I’m set to go for Sunday’s race.”
Completing the top five in Saturday’s first PWC race of the weekend were the Classic BMW pair of Jayson Clunie in the No. 27 Classic BMW BMW M235iR and Matt Travis in the No. 26 Classic BMW BMW M235iR.
Round 8 of the Touring Car category will take place Sunday at 3:40 p.m. PDT and can be viewed live on http://www.world-challenge.com and the Pirelli World Challenge YouTube page.
