Former IndyCar driver Luca Filippi will join the returning Oliver Turvey at NIO Formula E Team (formerly NextEV/NIO) for the 2017-18 season. Filippi replaces Nelson Piquet Jr.,

who switched to Jaguar

.

Filippi ran 23 IndyCar races from 2013 to 2016 with a career-high second place in Toronto in 2015 for CFH Racing. He also drove for Bryan Herta Autosport, Rahal Letterman Lanigan and Dale Coyne.

NIO Formula E team principal Gerry Hughes said that the NextEV NIO 003 chassis completed "multiple seasons worth" of testing mileage over the summer to test a new rear end. The team has completed 15 full days of private testing in Spain and exceeded its mileage target.

"It is a new electric world for me and a new racing system oriented to the future that is full of talent and clean technology, so I am extremely excited to become a part of it," Filippi said. "During our first test run together in Spain I immediately had a great feeling with the car and all the people in the team. To join NIO for S4 is a dream come true and I am very much looking forward to working with Oliver and [team principal] Gerry [Hughes] and starting this journey with everyone in the NIO Formula E team."

Turvey returns for a third season with the team. He made several apperances in Super Pole in season three and scored his maiden pole in Mexico.
