Inside Hinchcliffe’s wild Pocono slide
If the Guinness Book of World Records has an award for the longest and fastest drift, Verizon IndyCar Series James Hinchcliffe should keep an eye on his mailbox, because there's a prize on the way.
The Canadian ace successfully completed one of the most incredible drifts open-wheel racing has ever seen during Sunday's ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway, and according to his on-board data system, the No. 5 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda did things an IndyCar was never designed to do.

Entering Turn 1 on Lap 102, Hinchcliffe was travelling at "220 miles per hour before his steering correction," SPM technical director Nick Snyder told RACER. Drifting into the high line as Turn 2 approached, the No. 5 lost grip on the dirty track surface and the back of the car took off.
"He got it down to 191mph at the moment it started to slide," Snyder continued. "He had 201 degrees of steering input, right-hand down, to catch it."
At the speed he was traveling on such a large track – 2.5 miles in length – the distance Hinchcliffe covered while feeding opposite lock into the car...and keeping it off the wall...could be the most impressive feat of all.
"The first slide lasted 303 feet," an amazed Snyder said. "Then it went on him again, and that second slide lasted 290 feet – basically a football field apiece."
