Larson quick as crashes mar Sonoma practice

Troubles continued for Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers in final practice at Sonoma Raceway.

Furniture Row Racing rookie Erik Jones has gone to a backup car after he wheel-hopped the No. 77 in Turn 11 early in the session. Jones, competing at Sonoma for the first time, hit the tire barrier with the right side of his Toyota Camry.

"I just got some wheel hop and then got loose and hit the fence," said Jones, who was 34th in practice and did get some laps in the backup car. "I've been frustrated all day and this just compounds that. We have to get the backup out and try to learn more and try to get some speed out of the 5-hour ENERGY Camry."

At the same time Jones had his trouble, Cole Whitt spun going up the hill to Turn 2. Whitt had a broken oil cooler and was leaking fluid that resulted in the spin.

Late in the session, Chase Elliott destroyed his No. 24 Chevrolet when he lost control in Turn 10 and hit the wall. He, too, will be in a backup car for the Toyota Save / Mart 350 (Sunday, 3 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1).

"Just made a mistake; completely my fault," Elliott said. "I hate it for my teammates on the 24 team, they sure don't deserve it, they worked hard this past week to get this car ready to come out here, a long ways from home. Made a mistake and shouldn't be having that."

Kyle Larson was fastest in the session with a lap of 94.389 mph over Kyle Busch, who had a lap of 94.344 mph. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was third fastest at 94.242 mph. AJ Allmendinger at 94.221 mph and Jamie McMurray at 94.017 mph made up the top five.

"We were pretty decent in qualifying trim and I thought we made some improvements in race trim from first practice to second practice," Larson said. "I thought it was a successful practice. You can always be better.  Forward drive is terrible here, so, working on that is a struggle, but felt like we made some gains.”

Kurt Busch (93.851 mph) was sixth fastest; Kevin Harvick (93.849 mph) was seventh fastest; Clint Bowyer (93.802 mph) was eighth fastest; Brad Keselowski (93.729 mph) was ninth fastest; and Martin Truex Jr. (93.679 mph) was 10th fastest. Truex paced the first practice earlier in the day.

Alon Day was 23rd on the leaderboard in his Cup Series debut driving the No. 23 Toyota for BK Racing. Billy Johnson, making his debut in the No. 43 for Richard Petty Motorsports, was 29th fastest.
