SunEnergy1's Habul earns IMSA probation

SunEnergy1 Racing team owner/driver Kenny Habul will need to be a model citizen for the next three WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races after earning probation for his negligent driving at the Chevy SportsCar Grand Prix in Detroit.

Habul went to the inside of Turn 3, locked his braked and plowed into Visit Florida Racing's Renger van der Zande during the 1h40m race – just as the race went yellow for a crash elsewhere on the circuit – which caused both cars to retire.

Here's a look at the pair if incidents that put us under caution. Both occurred on the same lap. The No. 75 received a penalty.#DetroitGPpic.twitter.com/WsWLawmPeZ— IMSA (@IMSA)June 3, 2017

"I am very disappointed because we had the second-fastest lap of the race and we were doing awesome," van der Zande said after the hit. "But before I could do that I got hit from another car who just [locked] his brakes and he slammed into the side of me. That just isn't what we need at the moment."

According to IMSA, the Australian driver ran afoul of Rule 30.6, which states "Any Competitor who, in the sole opinion of the Race Director, engages in any behavior deemed to represent an unjustifiable risk or reckless endangerment may be warned or penalized."
