Second Las Vegas NASCAR Cup weekend confirmed

Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host two NASCAR tripleheader weekends beginning in 2018.

The announcement was made official after

a seven-year $2.5 million sponsorship and marketing agreement

was approved by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Wednesday afternoon. The 1.5-mile speedway will host its annual spring event (now a tripleheader with the addition of the Camping World Truck Series) and a second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race in the fall.

The second Las Vegas race is taking the race currently held by fellow Speedway Motorsports, Inc. track, New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It will make Las Vegas the second race in the Cup playoffs.

The Truck Series race from that same weekend at New Hampshire is also moving to Las Vegas, and filling out the fall weekend will be the Xfinity Series, which moves to Las Vegas from a standalone event at Kentucky Speedway.

In a statement following the announcement, Kentucky Speedway General Manager Mark Simendinger said the fall Las Vegas race will be the first race of the Xfinity Series playoffs.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Speedway Motorsports and Las Vegas Motor Speedway to create a NASCAR spectacle worthy of the greatest racing in the world and the Entertainment Capital of the World," said Marcus Smith, Speedway Motorsports, Inc. president and CEO. "It's taken a tremendous amount of work to make this happen, and we are very thankful to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and NASCAR for their support in our endeavor to create a tripleheader NASCAR weekend in such a world-class destination."

Added Smith, "Fans and tourism officials in New Hampshire and Kentucky should know that we are still very committed to creating motorsports entertainment in those regions. We will work hard to make sure the July NASCAR race weekends that we will continue to host in New Hampshire and Kentucky are bigger and better than ever before for our fans, sponsors and stakeholders."

Las Vegas is now the first facility on the NASCAR schedule to annually host two tripleheader weekends in one season.

Attending Wednesday's announcement were Las Vegas natives Kyle and Kurt Busch, Noah Gragson, and Spencer Gallagher as well as Brendan Gaughan.

"We're honored that NASCAR has entrusted us with a second NASCAR weekend," Las Vegas Motor Speedway president Chris Powell said. "We've pursued a second NASCAR premier series race weekend for quite some time, so this news is monumental for everyone at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as well as everyone in our wonderful city."

Dates for both Las Vegas weekends will be revealed when NASCAR announces the 2018 schedules for all three national series later this year.
