LSR: Crash damage ends Thompson's record attempt
Danny Thompson's attempt to break the wheel-driven land speed record at Mike Cook's Land Speed Shootout has come to an abrupt end.
Thompson was not injured, but Challenger 2 sustained heavy damage to the rear suport and suspension components when the streamliner blew a rear tire "coming up on the mile," according to the Shootout team. The team evaluated the damage and concluded that they could not repair it.
"Damage, unfortunately, appears to be extensive," Thomspon wrote on his Facebook account. "We're still investigating what actually happened, but near term repairs are unrealistic. We won't be making any more runs at Cook's. According to our GPS data, we were going 413mph at around the 4.6 mile mark when the accident occurred."
Thompson had previously announced this event would be Challenger 2's last runs in competition. The car was to be retired after September 20th.
