The World 100, a late-model race at Eldora Speedway – the dirt track owned by NASCAR star Tony Stewart – was struck by tragedy Saturday night as Shane Unger (pictured, photo courtesy of Eldora Speedway), a resident of nearby Rossburg, Ohio, died from injuries suffered in a multi-car wreck.

The Speedway said in a news release that the incident occurred during a late restart in the second heat race at the World 100. Unger, 35 was involved in a multi-car crash in Turn 3 of the half-mile oval. Emergency crews quickly attended to Unger and placed him in an ambulance to transport him to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. USA Today reported that Unger's car was equipped with a HANS Device.

Drivers in the final race of the night lined up four cars wide as a tribute to Unger, after news of his passing was announced.
