PWC: GT Cup Diary - Corey Fergus

Road America is my favorite racetrack, and as always, it lived up to my expectations last weekend when I competed in two Pirelli World Challenge GT Cup races there.

For the first time this season we got the car to handle the way we wanted, and I qualified second for Race 1 (which tied our best qualifying effort previously this season). I just wasn’t ready for it, because I’ve gotten used to a poor handling car all season. It took me 13 laps to really figure it out, and by the end of the race I was the quickest Cup car. It was a missed opportunity for sure in Race 1, but the whole team was happy with the progress we made and more excited for the next race than ever.

In Race 2 we made a change to the setup because we thought it might be damp at the start of the race. It turned out to be a dry race, so our setup didn’t work out as planned. But the track came to us as the race progressed, and at the end I was faster once again. I only finished 0.7 seconds behind second.

This weekend was a huge improvement for us. It’s the most competitive we’ve been. We now feel that we can be competing for the win in the future. We would like to test before the next race so that we can get used to this new setup and come out of the gate swinging at Mid-Ohio. It’s our home track so we’ll be looking to perform well in front of family, friends, and customers.

On paper, the Road America race weekend looks like just another one of our weekends this year. But we as a team know the progress we made. It was a breakthrough weekend and has given us a new inspiration.
