IHRA: Throwback Thursday - 2015 Mopar Rocky Mountain Nationals

The Mopar Rocky Mountain Nationals will be held July 15-17 at Castrol Raceway, which bills itself as “Canada’s Premiere Motorsports Complex.” The Edmonton, Alberta facility, because of its far-north location, has a relatively short season, so Castrol Raceway absolutely packs its schedule from the end of April to the beginning of October – there’s 15 days of racing scheduled for July alone.

Indeed, Castrol Raceway is a multi-purpose motorsports facility. In addition to the IHRA-sanctioned quarter-mile drag strip, there’s a road course, a three-eighths mile clay oval, a 10-acre motocross track and mini-sprint kart track. Twice Castrol Raceway was voted North America’s top IHRA racing facility.

Edmonton itself has a long history of racing – the old Edmonton International Speedway staged major international car races, including rounds of the Can-Am Challenge Cup for sports cars between 1968 and 1973, and again in 1981. Denis Hulme of New Zealand, the 1967 Formula 1 World Champion, was the Can-Am star, winning four races in a row from 1968 to 1971. Champ Car competed at the Edmonton airport circuit from 2005-2007.

So what’s the action like at Castrol Raceway? Here’s a sample from the 2015 Mopar Rocky Mountain Nationals.
