The Great Race with Toyota: Day 9

To celebrate 50 years of the Corolla, RACER has teamed up with Toyota to compete in the 2016 Hemmings Great Race with a first-generation 1970 Corolla sedan.

13-time X Games BMX Vert overall gold medal winner and SCORE Baja 1000 class winner Jamie Bestwick is the driver, while RACER’s editor-in-chief Laurence Foster takes on navigating duties for the nine-day marathon.

Joining them on the ninth and final day’s route from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the finish in Moline, Ill., is Andy Bell. Canadian-born Bell is a former freestyle motocross rider, Nitro Circus original member and the co-founder of Sweatpants Media.

Starting in San Rafael, Calif., June 18, and ending in Moline, Ill., June 26, the Great Race is for cars built before 1972. It takes in nearly 2,500 miles of America’s most scenic highways and byways in a test of driving and navigating skill. Outright speed doesn’t win the event – instead, each competitive section has to be completed in a pre-set time. Finish a section early or late and you’ll earn time penalties, so every second really does count.

Each day of the 2016 Hemmings Great Race we’ll be bringing you a video postcard from the road. Catch the latest episodes at and
