SST: Mingay upgraded to fair condition
Australian Stadium SUPER Trucks Series driver Matt Mingay, who was seriously injured in a crash during the first race of the Belle Isle weekend, has been upgraded to fair condition at DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said.
Mingay required reconstructive surgery to insert a prosthetic chin to rebuild his jaw and mouth region. His family reports that Mingay suffered facial and head injuries in the accident, along with a small fracture of his T1 vertebrae, and he continues to make progress in his recovery. In a statement released by the trucks series, the family indicated they remain hopeful that he will be released from hospital in the coming days so he can travel home to Australia to continue his recovery.
The Detroit News reported Mingay's truck flipped over after swerving to avoid traffic during the race, shearing off the roof.
The Queensland, Australia, native is a stunt rider, stunt-riding instructor and an action sports entertainer, according to his website. He had two SST wins in 2015.
