INDYCAR: Hildebrand in for Newgarden at Road America test

J.R. Hildebrand will be driving Josef Newgarden's car on Wednesday at Road America for the official IndyCar test there and then is on standby.

Newgarden suffered a fractured right clavicle and broken bone in his right hand after a nasty crash and flip during Sunday's Firestone 600 at Texas.

"I got the call from Ed [Carpenter] to do the test at Elkhart Lake but right now the team doesn't know how long Josef will be out, so I'll just do the best I can and see what happens," said Hildebrand (above, with Carpenter), who raced at Indianapolis last month for ECR. "It seems to be a bit of a moving target when he'll be ready to race again but I remember when Ryan Dalziel busted his shoulder blade and they pinned him up and he was back two weeks later, so who knows?

"Testing is a premium these days so Spencer [Pigot] and I will try and get with the program as fast as possible. I know Josef had a good test up there earlier."

Hildebrand, who finished sixth at the Indy 500, has driven the challenging 4-mile road course in Wisconsin but it's been a while.

"I ran a couple of Atlantic races and Formula Ford 2000 but I think the last time was 2007," he said. "The good news is that nobody else has been racing an Indy car there either."

Indy cars last ran at Road America in 2007 as a round of the Champ Car World Series.
