
PWC: Palmer, De La Torre injured in heavy accident at Lime Rock
Drivers Andrew Palmer and Jorge De La Torre have been airlifted to Hartford Hospital following a serious accident in warm-up for this afternoon's Pirelli World Challenge race at Lime Rock Park.
A spokesman for the track told WFSB-TV that Palmer and De La Torre were were taken to Sharon Hospital following the accident, where there conditions were stabilized, before being airlifted to Hartford.
In a statement, Bentley Motorsport subsequently confirmed that Palmer had suffered an unspecified head injury:
"Bentley Motorsport can confirm that Bentley Team Absolute driver Andrew Palmer will remain in hospital following an incident at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut earlier today. He has sustained a head injury and is being closely monitored after treatment by specialists.
"Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Brian Gush, comments: “Everyone at Bentley Motorsport is thinking of Andrew and we all send him our best wishes. We are a close-knit community and we have team members at the hospital with him and his family. We will continue to offer our support to them at this difficult time. Our thanks go to the trackside team at Lime Rock Park and the medical professionals who have helped Andrew so far."
Aston Martin released the following statement on De La Torre's condition:
"Jorge has sustained various injuries, including a number of fractures and bruising to the torso. He will remain in hospital where he will be closely monitored by the medical team."
According to reports, Palmer's No. 87 Bentley Team Absolute Bentley Continental GT3 (above, LAT photo) collided with De la Torre's No. 4 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 when the latter had come to a stop in the Turn 1 runoff area. Palmer's car reportedly was launched over the Aston Martin upon impact and flew over multiple tire barriers.
