INDY 500: Kanaan tops Carb Day practice

Tony Kanaan topped a busy Carb Day at Indianapolis Speedway, the Ganassi driver ending the final Indy 500 practice session with a best lap of 226.280mph.

Kanaan posted his time 15 minutes before the end of the session to unseat erstwhile leader Carlos Munoz, although the Andretti driver's 224.772mph effort was still good enough to keep him second fastest. Scott Dixon, Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top five.

“I’m happy with my car,” Kanaan said. “Obviously, I have to pass 17 people before I get really happy with my car...

“After the struggle in qualifying, we really focused – me and [teammate Scott] Dixon – on the race. And you can see both of us at the top there.”

The track remained very active right through the session, which was extended by 10 minutes following an early caution for debris. Later, Pippa Mann brought the yellows out again when she lost control of her Coyne car and swung unto the wall at Turn 4. Mann was able to climb out of the wreckage unaided, and was later checked and cleared to drive by medical personnel.

It was Mann's second accident during the Month of May: last week she hit the wall after suffering a rear wing failure. The cause of today's crash is yet to be confirmed, although Mann spent several moments inspecting the rear of her car before being taken to the medical center.

“I’m absolutely fine,” Mann said. “I just really feel sorry for the crew. I was trying to find some clean air in pack running there, got a little too low on the inside. Dropped the ball and gave them some work to do overnight. The good news is the damage wasn’t too bad.”
