MOTOGP: Rabat undergoes successful surgery

Marc VDS MotoGP rider Tito Rabat has undergone successful surgery on the collarbone he fractured at Mugello. The rookie crashed his Honda early in third practice for the Italian Grand Prix last Saturday morning, ending his weekend.

While Rabat suffered a fracture-dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint in his left shoulder, subsequent inspection revealed the injury was not as bad as originally thought. Rabat underwent a 90-minute operation in Barcelona on Monday with regular MotoGP surgeon Dr Xavier Mir and Dr Victor Marlet, with a titanium plate and eight screws inserted.

A time frame on when Rabat will return to riding has not been set, with Barcelona hosting the next round on June 3-5.

"A fractured collarbone was a high price for Tito to pay in what looked like an innocuous crash at the Italian Grand Prix," Marc VDS team principal Michael Bartholemy said. "The good news is that the damage wasn't as extensive as first feared and that he was able to return to Barcelona quickly for treatment. The surgery, carried out by Doctors Mir and Marlet, was a success, but we need to confer with them again later this week before deciding with Tito at which race he will return.

"We know Tito will be keen to get back on the bike as soon as possible, but we want him to be fully fit before he does so."

Rabat was one of two MotoGP riders injured at Mugello, with Loris Baz suffering a broken foot in a first-corner pile-up.

The Avintia Ducati man will undergo his surgery on Wednesday and is also in doubt for Barcelona.
