FE: Magneti Marelli to supply Mahindra motor

Magneti Marelli will become a powertrain component supplier in Formula E next season by providing the motors for Mahindra Racing.

The Italian company is already involved in the all-electric single-seater series as a telemetry partner but, as revealed by Autosport, wanted to supply teams with powertrain components from the 2016-'17 campaign.

Mahindra announced its M3Electro will utilize Magneti Marelli motors for season three on Friday morning in Paris.

"Mahindra Racing has developed a very strong relationship with Magneti Marelli over the past few months while developing our powertrain for the next season," said team principal Dilbagh Gill, who confirmed the season-three car has not yet started testing. "As an established EV manufacturer and an FIA Formula E manufacturer, we have a mandate to drive the future of EV technology, and that begins with developing the most innovative ideas and components."

The Magneti Marelli motor was designed with the championship's initial, more aggressive, season-three technical targets in place. Battery capacity and peak power output will no longer be increased but Magneti Marelli motorsport director Roberto Dalla said the same challenges still applied.

"Performance, efficiency and reliability are going to be key elements to race in season three," he said.
