INDYCAR: Castroneves fast again in final practice
It was cooler, slower and safer in Friday night's final practice period for Saturday night's Desert Diamond 250 race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Following three big crashes during practice and qualifying, all 21 cars turning hot laps in the cooler temperatures avoided the PIR walls in the 35-minute session.
Helio Castroneves, who captured the pole position in the heat of the day with a record speed of 192.324mph, turned the quickest lap of 185.755mph in his Team Penske Dallara-Chevrolet with teammate Juan Montoya close behind at 186.227 in the Verizon Special.
Josef Newgarden was third quick at 185.810mph in the Century 21 Chevy as teams put on more downforce to simulate the racing conditions they'll face in the second race of 2016.
As it did in qualifying, Chevrolet dominated the final practice with its drivers claiming the fastest 10 laps.
James Hinchcliffe, who pounded the Turn 1 wall early in Friday morning hot laps, got back out with only 10 minutes left in the session and quickly worked up to the 12th best speed of 182.104mph in his Arrows Honda.
Carlos Munoz, who backed into the Turn One wall during his qualifying run, returned to action in his backup Andretti Honda but Takuma Sato, the first driver to crash Friday in the ABC Supply Honda, was not able to get back on the legendary one-mile oval.
