PWC: Lewis concludes GT sweep at St. Pete

It was a dream weekend for EFFORT Racing's Michael Lewis, who drove his Porsche 911 GT3 R to the pole and the win in both of the Pirelli World Challenge GT races at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Lewis, whose background is open-wheel racing, has adapted well to racing GT cars with roofs, setting the fastest lap of the race at 1 minute, 13.744 seconds en route to his flag-to-flag victory. The race went only 29 laps, with the Cadillac safety car leading the field for most of the race, as two major incidents ate up more than half the 50-minute allotted time.

The race had barely started when Corey Fergus slammed the wall in his No. 00 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car on lap 2, resulting in a lengthy caution period for the clean-up and to repair a damaged concrete barrier. The race finally went green on lap 16, with Saturday's winner Lewis in the lead, and only 19 minutes left in the 50-minute timed race.

Lewis opened a healthy lead over James Davidson in the No. 33 Nissan GTR GT3, and in third was Lewis' EFFORT Racing teammate, Patrick Long, up from his seventh-place starting slot. Johnny O'Connell and Michael Cooper, the two drivers in the Cadillac ATS-V.R.s, were fourth and fifth.

The yellow flag fell again with 10 minutes to go for an incident in Turn One that left K-PAX McLaren 650S teammates Alvaro Parente and Austin Cindric out of contention, with Cindric's No. 6 getting the worst of it with a hard hit against the wall.

The clock was ticking, with less than two minutes remaining as the green flag fell for the final time. Lewis and Davidson made contact as they jockeyed for position going into the first turn, but Lewis held the line and the lead.

At the checkered flag, it was Lewis, sweeping the weekend, followed by Davidson and Cadillac driver Michael Cooper in third, after catching Patrick Long going wide at the end of the front straight. Fifth after Long was O'Connell, Cooper's Cadillac teammate.

Martin Fuentes repeated as GTA winner in his Ferrari 458 Italia, while Sloan Urry won GT Cup in his Porsche.

Next up for the Pirelli World Challenge: The Toyota GP of Long Beach weekend, April 15-17.
