GP2: Ghiotto moves up with Trident
GP3 runner-up Luca Ghiotto has secured a step up to GP2 for the 2016 season with Trident.
The Italian won five races in GP3 last year with Trident but he was beaten to the title at the deciding round by new Renault Formula 1 reserve driver Esteban Ocon.
Having tested with Trident as well as Racing Engineering and Rapax in the GP2 test that followed in Abu Dhabi, Ghiotto said that a move up to the series would be dependent on raising the necessary budget, but he has now clinched a deal to remain with Trident.
"I can't wait to line up for this new adventure," said Ghiotto, who turns 21 later this month. "Last year, it was tough for me to fight so hard and not winning the title. "However, it has been an extremely useful experience with the help of the excellent teamwork among the whole Trident stable."
Trident scored four GP2 podiums last season with Ghiotto's compatriot Raffaele Marciello, who has switched to Russian Time for 2016.
The team said Ghiotto's deal is part of a collaboration with the Italian motorsport authority ACI Sport, "a relationship aimed at supporting and promoting the careers of young and talented racers."
