WEC: Petrov to drive for SMP Racing
Former Renault Formula 1 and Mercedes DTM driver Vitaly Petrov will return to racing in the World Endurance Championship next year. The Russian will join SMP Racing in the LMP2 class of WEC.
"I would like to thank [team owner] Boris Romanovich and the SMP Racing team for the opportunity to join this big family and also those who have helped me throughout my career," said Petrov. "It will not be easy in 2016, but we know what to do to get results. I am sure that next year we will fight for the title and will do everything possible to do so."
SMP Racing contested the European Le Mans Series in 2015 with two of its BR Engineering BR01s, and finished sixth in LMP2 at Le Mans with the entry driven by Nicolas Minassian, Maurizio Mediani and Devi Markozov.
Petrov will join the team next year as it steps up to a full WEC campaign, as one of its other 2015 drivers, Mikhail Aleshin returns to IndyCar with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
The 31-year-old spent 2015 on the sidelines after 58 grands prix with Renault and Caterham, finishing third in the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, and a single season in the DTM with Mercedes in which he failed to score a point.
