Schumacher 'still fighting' says Todt

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher "is still fighting" according to close family friend and FIA president Jean Todt.

It is now 22 months since Schumacher sustained severe brain injuries following a skiing accident in the French Alps. After initially being placed in a medically-induced coma, Schumacher spent a number of months in intensive care in Grenoble hospital before finally regaining consciousness. That allowed him to be moved to a hospital closer to his home in Lausanne last September, before then finally returning home in early September. Since then little information has been revealed about the 46-year-old and his recovery.

Todt, speaking at a media briefing ahead of this weekend's Mexican Grand Prix, at least offered a small insight into Schumacher's latest situation.

Todt, who remains close to the Schumacher family, said: "It was interesting last week after Lewis [Hamilton] won the title for third time. You saw the figures [referring to Schumacher's seven championships]. I was very proud of what Michael achieved. Sometimes you tend to forget what he did.

"Michael is a close friend, his family is very close to me, and I'm very close to them as well. I see Michael very often, and Michael is still fighting, and we must keep fighting with the family."
