NASCAR: Pocono joins 2016 Xfinity Series schedule

Alongside the announcement of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series schedule, NASCAR revealed the calendar for its second-tier Xfinity Series. Details are still being finalized for the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, so its schedule will be announced at a later time.

Like the Sprint Cup schedule, the Xfinity Series is largely unchanged from this year, reflecting NASCAR's emphasis on continuity for its national series events. However, the series will race at Pocono for the first time, pairing with Sprint Cup for its first weekend at the Pennsylvania tri-oval in June.

NASCAR will kick off the 2016 season against the new backdrop of a completely reimagined Daytona International Speedway under the the speedway’s $400 million redevelopment project. After Daytona, both series will be in action the following week at Atlanta. Both series then will travel to Las Vegas, Phoenix and Auto Club Speedway (Fontana).

"We learned that NASCAR Goes West worked very well in keeping momentum and interest for NASCAR in these markets," said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "The tracks put a lot of effort behind making it successful and we think it can continue to have a positive impact as it gains traction from being an annual effort. The efficiency of conducting three consecutive events also is helpful to the teams and industry."
