At the Coronado Speed Festival: The races

Eleven Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) groups plus the Historic Trans-Am series converged on the tight, 1.7-mile makeshift course of the runways of North Island Air Station on Coronado Island Sept. 18-20 to produce some outstanding racing. The competitive action kept fans in packed grandstands affixed to their seats – either sitting or standing.

By Sunday some race entries had fallen by the wayside during Friday practice and Saturday qualifying. Unfortunately, this included comedian and car guy

Adam Carolla with his 1968 Datsun 2000

, which ended its Saturday Group 3 qualifying race on the hook, the victim of a blown engine. With the SVRA combining its Groups 3 and 4 in one race and Groups 5 and 7 in another, there were 10 races in all. These contests boasted 203 entries although some cars competed in more than one event. Below is a list of the top three finishers for each race.

  2. Ken Epsman, 1971 AMC Javelin
  3. Jim Hague, 1971 Boss 302 Mustang

Noteworthy: Leading into the last corner Brown got out of shape on his exit and Epsman briefly pulled even. Brown was able to recover to show off his Camaro’s impressive horsepower and prevail at the flag (see video below). Fox Sports announcer and occasional vintage racer Mike Joy recorded a credible finish, bringing his 1966 Mustang home 11th in the 15-car field.
