Formula E: Frijns to race for Andretti team

Ex-Sauber and Caterham Formula 1 reserve driver Robin Frijns will race for the Andretti Autosport Formula E team in the second season of the all-electric championship.

Frijns won back-to-back titles in Formula BMW, Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5 during his single-seater career, and currently leads the Blancpain Sprint GT series in an Audi R8 with Laurens Vanthoor. The Dutchman joined Andretti for the final pre-season test at Donington Park, where he sampled the season-one Spark SRT-01_E for the first time.

"It is an honor to be part of the Andretti family and to drive for them in Formula E," said Frijns. "It's a new championship and a completely new challenge for me.

"The way of driving and saving energy is going to be tough, but fun and I am really looking forward to the first race in Beijing in a few weeks time."

Andretti abandoned the troubled powertrain it was developing for season two midway through the final Donington test (TOP). That meant Frijns managed just 37 laps on the final day, but team owner Michael Andretti said he was impressed.

"We're very excited to have Robin join the team," he said. "He's only done one test for us, but he did a really good job and he has a great attitude.

"We feel that with him and Simona [de Silvestro], we have a strong team put together and are ready for season two."
