SAFEisFAST: Max Papis joins "Ask a Pro" section
Max Papis, one of the few drivers to have competed in Formula 1, IndyCar, NASCAR and Le Mans, is the latest online driving instructor for SAFEisFAST.com.
The 45-year old Italian is one of the most experienced and versatile racing drivers still competing and his many successes include multiple Champ Car wins, victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 2004 GrandAm championship title.
His early success in open-wheel cars earned him a test driver role with the Lotus F1 team in 1994. Midway through the following season, he made his F1 debut for Footwork Arrows, competing in seven races for the British team and scoring a best finish of seventh at the Italian Grand Prix.
In 1996 he headed to the U.S., taking the wheel of a Ferrari prototype in the 24 Hours of Daytona. During a relentless final stint, Papis unlapped himself and strung together a long succession of fast laps, just missing out on the race win but earning the moniker "Mad Max" as a result.
Later that year he made his Indy car debut, eventually earning a drive with the front-running Team Rahal with whom he would win three races in the early 2000s. Throughout the decade he would achieve much success in sports cars, winning multiple races, including the 2002 24 Hours of Daytona.
From 2006 onward he dovetailed his sports car commitments with drives in various NASCAR series. This year he has competed in the TUDOR United Sports Car Championship, finishing on the podium at Watkins Glen in June. Since 2012 he has also acted as a driver coach for NASCAR stars Austin and Ty Dillon and in 2014 he won the ROTAX Pan American Karting Championship.
