Second wave of SCCA Solo National Champions hit the concrete

As 38 drivers have already earned titles, the 43rd Annual Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships Presented by Garmin VIRB, a new batch of championship hopefuls have taken to the two competition courses at the Lincoln Airpark.

Wednesday's on-course action was bookended by wet conditions. Like Tuesday, overnight thunderstorms left the concrete course surface wet. The wet conditions affected drivers during their initial runs, but things dried out quickly after that. The rain forecasted for the late afternoon arrived in the middle of first runs for Heat Five on the West Course. A large number of drivers were unable to make a lap in the dry and will be hoping for better conditions on Friday. Here is a breakdown of what happened on both courses:West CourseIn Heat One, David Marcus needed a single run to take the Street Touring Extreme class lead into the over-night break. On each of his subsequent runs, Marcus was unable to better his time but nor could anyone else. Mack Siu Kei Tsang came close, but could only come within 0.394-second on his second run.In Street Touring Roadster, Kevin Dietz is the class leader following his three laps of the West Course during Heat Two. Dietz drove to the lead in a tight battle with Nick Bjoin and Christopher Lin nipping at his heels. The top three drivers are covered by 0.102-second. With that small of a differential at the top, tomorrow's result is anybody's guess. In Heat Three, Clemens Burger is working toward a successful title defense since his only back-to-back championship streak in 2009 and 2010. Burger ended day one of his fight to stay on top of the B-Mod world in first, but will have to work in order to retain his National Championship. Matthew Ellam sits 0.190-second behind Burger as the group will transfer to take on the quicker East Course on Friday. Meanwhile Kristen Acharya is making the bid for a National Championship in her first trip to the season-ending event.Mark Scroggs is making the case for walking away with two G Street national titles in as many visits to Lincoln. A rookie winner last year, Scroggs leads the field by 0.110-second over John Azevedo in Heat Four. For the first time in recent memory Jeff Kiesel is not leading the E Modified standings heading into the second day of competition. Kiesel has retained an iron grip on the class keeping a string of eight consecutive E Modified National Championships alive since 2007.During his first run, on a dry surface, Kiesel took out a cone. As the remainder of the first drivers in the heat cycled through, the rain began to fall. That left many of the early favorites without the opportunity to take a run at the West Course in the dry. The timing of the rain also hurt Kiesel in that his best time of the day would only be good enough for second place, with the cone penalty figured in. Many drivers are treating the entire competition as a one day event. At this point the door in E Modified is wide open.East CourseJames Yom ended his first day of competition in the No. 1 position in A Street, and captured the bulk of the attention in Heat One. He is just ahead of Mark Daddio by 0.017-second. Daddio was the class leader after two runs, but Yom was able to get the edge over Daddio during his third look at the course. That pushed Yom to the top of the leaderboard. Friday's more technical West Course should separate the cream from the chaff.Robert Lewis sits atop the C Prepared mountain, which totals 38 drivers. During Heat Two, Lewis methodically worked his times down logging the best lap on this final time around the East Course. He goes into the final day of competition at the Tire Rack Solo National Championships with a 0.189-second lead over Tommy Pulliam. In Street Touring Ultra, Nick Barbato set a smoking fast time during his initial run in Heat Three. Jeff Stuart coned away his first run, but backed things off and made a clean run showing unmatched speed. By his third run Stuart had found his groove and broke into the 39-second range on the fast and flowing east course. The result is a 0.273-second lead over Barbato.Jim Reyenga had a very up-and-down day in C Street. After rolling off the starting line for his opening run in Heat Four, Reyenga set a blistering time that seemed untouchable. Ultimately it ended up being the top time in the class, but Reyenga was unable to match his time in subsequent runs. In fact, his last run ended in a DNF. Will an initial fast lap be enough with a National Championship on the line? That question will have to wait until tomorrow for an answer. In Heat Five, Mina Ingraham, Caitlin Dunlap and Crissy Weaver will have three runs on Friday to sort out who will take home all the marbles in the Street Touring Ultra Ladies class. Ingraham leads Dunlap by 0.241-second, but Weaver is lurking in third. The final day of 2015 Tire Rack Solo National Championships will start Friday at 8:00 a.m. (CDT). The rain is forecasted to keep falling throughout the evening hours, so that may affect the first drivers to hit the course. However, the sun is supposed to shine all day on Friday. To find additional information on the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships Presented by Garmin VIRB, including full results and links to live audio and video, visit SCCA.com/SoloNats.LINCOLN, Neb. – The top two runners in each of the 37 classes competing Tuesday and Wednesday in the 43rd Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Championships presented by Garmin VIRB at Lincoln Airpark with class, leading driver, hometown and car; second place driver, hometown, car and gap behind first place.
