FLITES: Champion's trophy named after Wilson

Formula Lites will honor Justin Wilson by naming its championship trophy after the late IndyCar driver.

The winning driver will be awarded the Justin Wilson Formula Lites Champion Trophy, with the first having been given to inaugural title winner Vini Papareli of JDX Racing, ABOVE, who has secured the crown with two races still to run.

Wilson was connected to the Lites series through his long association with JDX founder and co-owner Jeremy Dale, who was team manager at RuSPORT when Wilson drove for the team in Champ Car in the mid-2000s.

"We are grateful to Justin Wilson's family for blessing this idea and honouring his memory for Vini and future Lites champions," said series co-managing partners Dennis McCormack and Ryan Arcerio.

"All of us involved with the Formula Lites series also thank our partners Honda Racing/HPD for helping bring this concept to life in a very short amount of time."

The 2015 Formula Lites season closes next weekend at Motor Speedway Resort in Texas.
