NASCAR: Throwback paint schemes, TV, track food planned for Darlington

NASCAR, its teams and NBC Sports are teaming up to commemorate NASCAR's rich racing history at Darlington Raceway with a salutes to the 1970s this weekend. The storied, egg-shaped track will be hosting a full slate of Labor Day weekend action for the first time in 12 years. The Southern 500 was run on Labor Day, or the weekend preceding the official holiday, at Darlington from 1950 through 2003.

Some 30 of the 43 entries are expected to field throwback paint schemes, including those shown below. Fans will also get in on the experience as concessions stands will include items that haven’t been on the menu in decades, such as fried green tomatoes, sausage perlo and pimento cheese sandwiches.

Throughout the weekend, NBC's broadcasts will feature retro highlights to commemorate the tradition of NASCAR racing. Graphics will include the vintage "living color" NBC peacock, while booth and studio talent appear in authentic 1970s-era apparal.

Pre-race features throughout the weekend will include a personal essay on Darlington Raceway written and voiced by longtime NASCAR broadcaster Ken Squier. Another legendary broadcaster – Ned Jarrett – will be joining the broadcast team as special guest.

NBC presents its first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event since Daytona on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. On Saturday, NBC presents Xfinity Series race from Darlington at 3 p.m. ET.
