IndyCar: Power tops warm-up at Sonoma

He left it late in the session, but Will Power grabbed top spot for Team Penske-Chevrolet with a 1min17.8107sec lap in Sunday morning warm-up for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.

The polesitter, like most of the field, spent a lot of the session on-track, rather than doing the traditional multiple pit stop practice, as everyone sought data on tire wear around the 2.52-mile course. This weekend has been dominated by talk of major tire wear on the abrasive surface, with some people believing the red (soft) Firestones hold their advantage for just one lap before falling away.

Takuma Sato’s late run put AJ Foyt Racing-Honda into P2, with Penske’s Simon Pagenaud third, just ahead of Graham Rahal’s Rahal Letterman Lanigan entry which received a new Honda last night.

After a weekend of tepid performance, KV Racing-Chevy’s Sebastien Bourdais was in strong form, leading most of the session and only slipping to fifth in the final minutes.

James Jakes suffered gearbox issues in his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda.

NBCSN coverage of the race starts at 1.00pm PST with green flag at 2.05pm.
